Sistema PJSFC's subsidiary Segezha Group is to invest RUB 805million into modernising and upgrading its waste treatment at the pulp and paper mill owned and operated by JSC Segezha. The aim of the investment is to cut the harmful emissions that the plant releases and will take around 3 years to complete.
The plan, according to Segezha, involves looking at the soda recovery boilers (SRBs)and replacing the precipitators located at the power station that provides the plant with its steam and electricity supply. One of the main atmospheric emissions, HPP-2, is associated with the SRBs . These machines complete a cycle whereby sulphates produced by the production process are returned and the special precipitator works to clean up any air emissions.
The investment program will fund the replacement of these precipitators on two of these SRBs. The third received a precipitator back in 2018 at a cost of RUB 200million. These actions alone will be able to significantly lower the amount of air emissions. The fourth SRB is already running at over 99.5% efficiency.
Alongside the replacement of equipment the quality of the air will also be controlled. The mill is looking at its impact on the atmosphere and ways of improving the sanitary protection zone around the site. A not inconsiderable amount has been budgeted in order to monitor the presence of gas emissions on the nearby residential areas. The Segezha Pulp-and-Paper Mill produces sack paper for packaging and sulfate unbleached pup. Pulp production involves cooking with results in a build up of sulphur-containing compounds which are extremely pungent. This can affect local residents so the company is attempting to improve the local environment by upgrading their equipment with more up-to-date and technologically advanced solutions.
