The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is funding the modernization of the waste management system in Iași, a county in north-eastern Romania, with a €5.2 million loans.
The financing will co-finance the €55.9 million investment package geared towards raising the county’s waste management system to EU standards. The European Regional Development Fund is backing the project with a €37.6 million grant, whilst Romania alone is making contributions of €13.1 million.
Under the investment program, the region will extend its primary landfill site whilst shutting down its environmental non-compliant waste facilities. The authorities will in addition purchase modern equipment for the collection and transportation of waste and all so build transfer and sorting stations.
