The Serbian Agriculture, Forestry and Waterworks Ministry has signed on for a project with a British laboratory.
The British National Twining Laboratory in York has signed the agreement with the Serbian Ministry, which is worth EUR 1.5 mln.
Agriculture Minister Goran Živkov said that in the next two years, experts from the laboratory will help Serbia to complete its national laboratory for the protection of plants and animals, which has already been built in Batajnica and is expected to start working by the end of the year.
Živkov said that officials of the British Agriculture Ministry will discuss plans for having Serbia create its own Agency for Rural Payments. The British Agency offered expert help to Serbia, stating that the existence of such an agency is necessary for EU membership and being able to receive funds from the EU.
Serbia has already begun to form the agency with the help of an EU project worth two million euros, which is being used to harmonize all legal regulations, while the World Bank is helping to equip the agency.
Živkov said that Great Britain is interested in importing “baby beef” from Serbia, as well as fruits and vegetables. There are discussions pending for the export of living sheep and goats from Great Britain to Serbia. He said that next year, Serbia will have representatives at the Food Fair in London for the first time, because the Agriculture Ministry has received an official invitation to attend.
