Lummus Technology, based in Texas, and Budapest-based MOL Group are moving forward with their 2023 chemical recycling partnership, entering the design phase for a 40,000 tonnes/year pyrolysis plant at MOL’s Tiszaújváros site in Hungary. The facility will leverage Lummus' New Hope Plastic Pyrolysis Technology, which processes mixed plastic waste into pyrolysis oil for sustainable fuel production or integration into existing steam and catalytic crackers for a full circular solution.
The plant, featuring a fully electric pyrolysis reactor, will achieve zero direct scope one emissions during regular operations. Lummus’ proprietary technology boasts a 70% hydrocarbon yield, making it a critical part of MOL’s broader strategy to enhance recycling capacity and circular economy initiatives. This project marks the first of several planned recycling plants at MOL’s sites in Hungary and Slovakia, further expanding their regional footprint in sustainable solutions.
MOL has been investing heavily in plastics recycling, including acquiring Aurora Kunststoffe and ReMat Zrt, companies that collectively provide a 40,000-tonne capacity. These investments allow MOL to supply a variety of sustainable compounds for industries such as automotive, construction, and packaging. Additionally, MOL’s strategic partnership with Germany’s APK for its Newcycling technology further strengthens its position as a leader in the circular economy, with plans to build a portfolio of over 100,000 tonnes of recycled plastic materials.
