Nokian Tyres has officially opened the world’s first full-scale zero CO2 emission tyre factory in Oradea, Romania. This groundbreaking facility, located in the north-western part of the country, represents a EUR 650 million investment, marking one of the largest investments in Romania in recent years. The project includes state aid from the Romanian government worth approximately EUR 100 million.
"We are thrilled to inaugurate our Oradea factory today, a milestone that strengthens our ability to serve customers across Central Europe and beyond. This facility is a key component in our strategy to achieve net sales of EUR 2 billion, and with its zero CO2 emissions, we are leading the industry towards more sustainable tyre manufacturing," said Jukka Moisio, President and CEO of Nokian Tyres.
The new factory, constructed in just under 15 months, is a pioneer in sustainable tyre production. Covering 54 hectares, the facility will commence commercial production in early 2025, focusing on passenger car tyres. It is strategically located to serve the Central European market, with an annual production capacity of up to 6 million tyres and plans for future expansion. Initially, 160 employees have been hired, with the potential to grow to 500, and most staff have received specialized training in Finland.
Romanian Minister of Labour, Simona Bucura-Oprescu, and other dignitaries attended the factory's inauguration alongside representatives from the Romanian and Finnish governments. In her speech, Bucura-Oprescu emphasized the global significance of the plant, stating, "This is a significant moment not only for Romania but for the global tyre industry, with the inauguration of the world's first tyre factory with zero CO2 emissions."
One of the most impressive features of the Oradea facility is its innovative approach to energy use. Nokian Tyres has completely eliminated fossil fuels, utilizing only CO2-free electricity. Part of the electricity comes from on-site solar power units, while tyre production uses steam generated by electric boilers powered by renewable energy. Additionally, the factory incorporates the latest machinery and technology to ensure energy-efficient manufacturing processes.
Adrian Kaczmarczyk, Senior Vice President of Operational Excellence at Nokian Tyres, said, "Our new Oradea factory showcases our commitment to sustainability, making Nokian Tyres a pioneer once again in the global tyre industry."
Nokian Tyres chose Oradea after an extensive evaluation of more than 40 locations across Europe. The decision was driven by several factors, including the availability of talent, strong infrastructure, a supportive business environment, and operational cost considerations.
"Oradea is now home to us," said Susanna Tusa, General Director and Vice President of Nokian Tyres Romania. "We are committed to being a good neighbor, supporting the local community, the regional economy, and every member of our team."
Nokian Tyres’ investment in Oradea not only strengthens its presence in the Central and Eastern European region but also sets a new standard for sustainable manufacturing in the tyre industry.
