The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is enhancing access to water and wastewater services in Romania’s Braila County with a loan of up to €14.2 million to SC Compania de Utilitati Publice Dunarea SA Braila, the county’s public utilities provider.
This loan will be supplemented by a co-investment from the European Union (EU) under its Infrastructure Operational Programme for Romania.
This financing is part of the EBRD's ongoing commitment to improving water infrastructure in Romania, building on nine previous loans extended to Romanian counties under the EBRD’s Sustainable Water Infrastructure Facility to support Transition (SWIFT). This initiative aligns with the EBRD's long-term efforts to elevate services and ensure compliance with EU laws, policies, and practices.
To date, the EBRD has financed 25 water operators in Romania, contributing nearly €450 million in loans alongside almost €5 billion in EU funding for the country’s water and wastewater facilities.
The combined investment from the EBRD and EU will support SC Compania de Utilitati Publice Dunarea SA Braila in completing a €240.8 million investment programme. This will expand service coverage for drinking water supply and wastewater collection and treatment to meet EU standards, bringing essential services to smaller municipalities and localities throughout Braila County.
