According to the latest GDP forecasts of the European Commission, which take into account purchasing power parity, Poland will level with Estonia and Hungary in terms of wealth in 2009.
GDP per capita will reach €14,100 this year. "Whereas the economies of most European Union countries are significantly shrinking, Poland's is still developing," said Ĺukasz Tarnawa, chief economist with PKO BP.
"This projection is not an abstract statistical indicator detached from reality. It shows that our standard of living is really coming closer to the one in Estonia or Hungary," said Artur BubiĹo, an analyst with bank BGĹť. The most wealthy EU nation in terms of per-capita income is still Ireland.
