After discussing with EU experts, the European Commission will inform the WTO of its plans to make it compulsory for Europe's olive oil producers to make origin labelling compulsory for virgin and extra virgin olive oils. This means that producers will have to mark their top brands with origin labels to inform consumers about the origin of the oil. EU's main trading partners are given a 60-day period to voice their opinion. If all goes well, the new rules would come into effect from July 2009.
