Multinational pulp and paper giant Weyerhaeuser has selected GdaĹsk as the location for its first cellulose fiber facility outside the US.
The plant, which is expected to employ 45 people, will process cellulose fibers for hygiene products. Construction is expected to be completed in 2012.
GdaĹsk’s authorities confirmed that the company had won a bid for the purchase of a 100,000 sqm plot for the project. The land is situated near the airport, within the Pomeranian Special Economic Zone, which will allow the company to deduct 40 percent of its construction costs from CIT.
Construction of the 17,000 sqm processing plant is expected to start in spring 2010. According to the company, Procter & Gamble will be the facility’s main customer.
Andrzej Bojanowski, deputy mayor of GdaĹsk for economic policy, told WBJ that the estimated cost of the investment was $50-75 (zĹ.143-214) million.
“We are actively trying to attract investors,” Mr Bojanowski explained when asked why Weyerhaeuser had decided on GdaĹsk. He mentioned public infrastructure investments, tax reliefs for investors and the well-developed harbor as the city’s prime advantages.
Speaking at a press conference last week, SĹawomir Majman, president of the Polish Information and Foreign Investment Agency, called the project “one of the most important foreign investment commitments in the country in 2009.”
