The Czech Republic has selected the US-headquartered engineering firm Jacobs for a project to treat and solidify 250 million tonnes of radioactive sludge. ÄEZ, the country's national utility, commissioned them to undertake projects incorporating radioactive waste management. This will include treating and solidifying 250 million tonnes of radioactive sludge, before transporting it in drums to a long-term storage facility. The contract is worth an estimated $3 billion (£2.4bn).
The first project is expected to take five years and will involve safety assessment and technical advice for a planned deep geological repository. The second contract is for consultancy services related to the decommissioning of the Dukovany Nuclear Power Plant. This marks Jacobs' first foray into the Czech Republic's nuclear industry. In a statement, Jacobs said it was looking forward to working with SÚRAO "to help ensure safe and responsible management of radioactive waste in the Czech Republic."
