Northvolt a leading European manufacturer of high-quality cells and battery systems has just a announced in invest in manufactuering in Pomerania Poland. The new plant will be a highly automated production plant and an engineering R&D center for battery modules and energy storage systems will be built in GdaĹsk. The investment outlays will amount to nearly USD 200 million (ie almost PLN 750 million). Up to 500 new jobs will be created under the new project.
The company received a positive decision on support for the new investment, under the Polish Investment Zone scheme. According to Polish government estimates, the European battery market will be worth EUR 250 billion by 2025. The EU has been promoting a strong European battery sector through relaxed public aid rules.
Poland has become a European leader in the production of lithium-ion batteries, with exports booming despite the pandemic.
With 61 battery-manufacturing plants, Poland is third in Europe after Germany, with 76, and Italy with 67, the Polish Investment and Trade Agency (PAIH) said on Friday.
