Emag, Romania’s largest online retailer, recently announced plans to invest some €90 million into a 130,000 sqm distribution centre 19km from the city of Bucharest.
Construction on this project is expected to start this month and should be completed by September of 2021. Moreover, company representatives expect systems to be online by July of the following year.
With this new facility, Emag hopes to implement a revolutionary “picking system,” ena-bling goods to be automatically sent to employees. Not only is this expected to increase productivity four-fold, but it will also allow multiple orders to be merged into a single package, reducing the volume and consumption of packaging materials.
On top of these improvements, Emag expects delivery speed to increase due to reduced order preparation time, larger storage capacity, etc. In the interest of maintaining its green reputation, the company will supply electricity to the facility via 40,000 sqm of so-lar panels and plant trees over a 10 ha area, which may become a major industrial site.
