Northland Power Inc., a leading Canadian renewable energy company, has acquired full ownership of two large-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Poland, totaling 300 MW / 1.2 GWh. The assets were purchased from Greenvolt Power Group, an international developer of renewable energy projects.
The acquisition strengthens Northland’s expanding presence in Poland and supports the country’s ongoing shift from coal toward renewable energy. According to Aurora research, Poland’s combined solar and wind capacity is expected to rise from 31 GW today to 139 GW by 2050, creating a significant need for grid-balancing technologies such as battery storage.
Two Major BESS Projects in Western Poland
The newly acquired projects include:
Both facilities are designed for four-hour storage duration and are located in western Poland. They benefit from 17-year capacity market contracts indexed to inflation, providing stable long-term revenue. Additional earnings are expected through energy arbitrage and participation in ancillary service markets.
Construction and financing are planned for 2026, with a total estimated investment of €200 million. Once operational, they will be among the first major BESS installations in Poland, reinforcing grid stability and supporting the country’s renewable energy goals.
Northland Power: Supporting Poland’s Energy Transformation
“This acquisition marks an important milestone in advancing Poland’s energy transformation and expanding Northland’s portfolio in a core market,” said Christine Healy, President and CEO of Northland.
She highlighted that battery storage is essential for building a reliable, lower-carbon energy system and aligns with Northland’s long-term growth strategy.
