Poland has overtaken Italy and Russia in car production, advancing to 15th place in the annual car-production ranking by the International Organization of Automobile Manufacturers (OICA). Despite the crisis, car production in Poland dropped by just seven percent y/y in 2009 to 879,000 units while 722,000 cars were manufactured in Russia, one million less than in 2008. In Italy meanwhile, car production dropped from over one million units in 2008 to 843,229 in 2009.
“Poland had good results last year because it produces new models in segments enjoying good sales, mainly the economy car segment,” said Wojciech Drzewiecki, an expert at automotive-industry research firm Samar.
Mr Drzewiecki said analysts are optimistic about this year’s results despite the fact that production of the popular Fiat Panda cars was being transferred to Italy from the Polish factory in Tychy.
“The popular Fiat 500 and Ford Ka will still be produced in Poland. We are also counting on GM’s Gliwice factory, which started producing the new Opel Astra at the end of 2009,” said Mr Drzewiecki.
